how to make a bug motel

jam jar
a nail
natural materials- sticks, leaves, flowers
hammer nails into the lid of the jam jar to allow oxygen to remain in the jar

fill with natural materials and find a bug!

keep the jar in a shady, cool place and make sure to release your new buddy after a few hours so that it doesn't miss it's home too much

I remember making these as a child too. Fantastic idea.

We recently kept a caterpillar in an old preserving jar and fed it and watched it until it turned into a moth. It was a wonderful experience for all of us. You think you 'know' how something works, like a caterpillar turning into a moth, but then to take the time to actually watch it slowly happen is amazing. And I have never seen such a beautiful moth!
